COPENHAGEN

By Michael Frayn

At the new Integrated Learning Centre,

Kingston, Ontario, Canada

The Tony Award-winning play that soars at the intersection of science and art, Copenhagen is an explosive re-imagining of the mysterious wartime meeting between two Nobel laureates to discuss the atomic bomb. In 1941 the German physicist Werner Heisenberg made a strange trip to Copenhagen to see his Danish counterpart, Neils Bohr.  They were old friends and close colleagues, and they had revolutionised atomic physics in the 1920s with their work together on Quantum mechanics and the uncertainty principle.  But now the world had changed, and the two men were on opposite sides in a world war.  The meeting was fraught with danger and embarrassment; it ended in disaster.

Why Heisenberg went to Copenhagen and what he wanted to say to Bohr are questions that have exercised historians ever since.  In Michael Frayn’s play, an ambitious, fiercely intelligent, and daring dramatic sensation, Heisenberg meets Bohr and his wife, Margrethe, once again to look for the answers to work out – just as they had worked out the internal function of the atom – how we can ever know why we do what we do.  A quantum drama of sorts, Copenhagen has been hailed as a masterpiece by audiences and critics alike.  (From the Anchor Books Summary)

Theatre Kingston is proud to bring this critically-acclaimed play to the Kingston region for the first time. In this unique production, the worlds of science and art collide - literally.  Copenhagen is being presented at the unique new Integrated Learning Centre, in Beamish Munro Hall.  The Centre is part of a new initiative by Queen’s Faculty of Applied science to help change the face of Engineering education.  Copenhagen is directed Caroline Baillie, PhD, the Dupont Chair of Engineering at Queen’s and international theatre professional with Critical Stage.

Featuring Mo Bock, Matthew Gibson and Heather Bonham - some of Kingston’s finest veteran professional actors, this production will be a unique and powerful event.
